Granted City Status in 2000 the City of Wolverhampton and its surrounding area has a bad image if you don't live here, which is a pity because it is a city and an area which has a lot to offer and which surprises all who visit it. Its bad image comes from age old misconceptions and the M5, M6 and the railway which run through the ugliest industrial areas.
So, what do we do about it? Well you have to come up here and see it for yourself. We are very lucky to be situated on the Staffordshire and Shropshire borders which have some of the finest countryside in England. We are close to the Peak District,
Snowdonia, the Wrekin, the Malverns and Clee Hills. There are many pretty picture postcard villages around about that deserve a visit. The city itself has a lively shopping centre, an integrated multi-cultural population, an art gallery, beautiful church gardens (pictured above), a rapidly growing university (pictured right), a fab night life, an excellent theatre, horse and dog racing tracks and of course our world famous sometime premiership/decent football team 'the Wolves' (Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, pictured below). Interestingly Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin is a season ticket holder and mad Wolves fan, despite being born in West Bromwich.
Wolverhampton and the surrounds is also 'home' to Tessa Sanderson (Olympic Gold Medalist), Shaun Perry (England rugby player), Slade (glam rockers), Beverly Knight (pop singer), Meera Syal (actress), Nigel Slater (food writer), Banks' Brewery and Tarmac plc amongst others. Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England and Eric Idle of Monty Python were both educated in Wolverhampton.
We are close to Birmingham (35mins. by tram from Wolverhampton St. Georges or 20mins. on the train) which is one of the most redeveloped cities in the country. Other local attractions include the Black Country Museum in Dudley, Dudley Zoo and Castle, West Midlands Safari Park at Kidderminster, the Seven Valley Railway at Bridgnorth (a delightful town in itself), Weston Park and Shugborough Hall; former home to royal snapper Lord Lichfield, as well as countless other things to see and do - so come here and make a weekend of it!
